History & Background | The original Castle Tower dates back to the 14th/15th Century and was extended in the 16th and 17th Centuries and was converted into a residence. During the 17th Century the Castle was occupied by the Musgrave Family. The Musgrave coat of arms are still on display in the property in several places. During the English Civil War the South side of Hayton Castle suffered considerable damage and was had to be rebuilt by Sir Edward Musgrave's son Richard. Hayton Castle is said to also be one of several places in Cumberland which offered hospitality to Mary Queen of Scots. |
