New Specialist Environment & Conservation Adviser Combines Cambridge Plant Sciences PhD with Family Farming Practicality

Welcome to the team Jake Moscrop!

We have made another key appointment in the expansion of its market-leading Environment and Forestry Team. Jake Moscrop joins the company as an Environment and Conservation Advisor with an exception level of academic qualification and a grounding in practical farming on the family farm near Bewcastle, Cumbria.

The appointment underlines the commitment we are making to support farmers and landowners adapting to the UK’s radical change of direction in farming policy. As Government support moves from the BPS to predominantly environment-focused grant schemes, Jake Moscrop will add another major new dimension to the advice that our Environment team can offer clients in the critical areas of Biodiversity Net Gain, Nutrient Neutrality and Carbon Net Zero.

With outstanding academic credentials, including a first-class honours degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Durham and a PhD in Plant Sciences from Cambridge, Jake nevertheless describes himself first and foremost as a farmer. "When I finished my PhD in 2022, I returned to the family farm to explore how me and my parents can adapt our farming practices to promote biodiversity, cut carbon, and keep the business viable.

It is currently a challenging time for farming in the UK, and I am very interested in how emerging opportunities for farmers can help agriculture and conservation work better together. Environmental schemes provide great potential to improve our natural landscapes whilst offering considerable benefits for farmers. I’m looking forward to being able to support farmers and landowners and help them make the most of these opportunities."

Jake joins us at a very exciting time. We’re building an Environment and Forestry team here with the strength in depth to give our clients the best advice across this critical area of farm and land management, and Jake’s expertise and experience will enable him to offer rounded advice for famers considering entering emerging environmental schemes, and assist us with ecological surveys including baseline surveys for Biodiversity Net Gain.  His combination of high level bio-science expertise and his understanding of farming makes him a great addition to the team, and a huge asset to clients who are looking to us to give them the guidance they need to secure an economically and environmentally sustainable future.
